Dorothy stood with her arms folded as Adam called Ainsley McCallum over to the house. Dorothy nodded in approval as Adam let out a heavy sigh. He couldn’t argue with his mother, not after everything he had put her through. Adam sat on the couch to await Ainsley’s arrival, while Dorothy headed to the kitchen to make coffee for everyone.

A few minutes later, Ainsley McCallum stepped into the cozy living room of the Hensley home. Her gaze immediately fell on Adam Hensley. He stood by the window and as he turned around his dark brown hair seemed to have been lit in warm tones under the evening light. Dorothy saw the detective’s cheeks flush.

"Adam," Ainsley said to break the silence. "You wanted to talk?"

He turned to face her, brown eyes filled with remorse. He fidgeted with his hands as he prepared to speak. Dorothy covered up a small cough to give Adam a push.

"Ainsley, um, I owe you an apology. I've been on edge lately and took it out on you, which wasn’t fair."

She crossed her arms and studied him for a moment to be certain Adam was sincere.

"I appreciate the apology, Adam. We all have our moments. Besides, we're both here for the same reason to get to the bottom of what's happening in Oakwood."

"Exactly," he agreed, relief visible on his face. "Speaking of which, have you heard any updates on the illegal documents case? There's so much gossip flying around town. It's hard to know what's true."

Ainsley sighed as she ran a hand through her hair. "Honestly, it's mostly rumors at this point. The FBI is still working on piecing everything together. It seems like every time we take one step forward, we take two steps back."

"Any idea who might be behind it?" Dorothy stepped forward and asked, curiosity piqued.

"Nothing concrete yet," Ainsley admitted, frustration evident in her voice. "But whoever it is, they're smart and well-connected. They've managed to evade us at every turn."

Adam ran a hand over his stubbled chin, deep in thought.

“We need a break in this case,” he mused. “If only we could find one person willing to talk, maybe we could start unraveling this mystery.”

"Have you considered offering some sort of incentive for information?" Dorothy suggested, voicing her thoughts aloud.

"Thought about it," Ainsley replied with a wry smile. "But the problem is, most people in this town are too scared to speak up. They're worried about retribution from the syndicate."

"Can't say I blame them," Adam admitted, feeling the weight of their shared responsibility. "We'll just have to keep digging and hope we find something that cracks the case wide open."

Ainsley's gaze met his, his intent stare was focused on the case. "Oh, we will. We've come too far to give up now. And when we do expose the truth, Oakwood will be a better, safer place because of it."

As they stood there, united in their purpose, a renewed sense of camaraderie blossomed between them. They would face the challenges ahead together, each one drawing strength from the other.
